Each year the Mara plays host to the world's number one natural show, the Great Wildebeest Migration from across the Serengeti. From July to October, the promise of rain and fresh life giving grass in the north pulls in around 1.3 million Wildebeest together into a single massive herd. They pour across the border into the Mara, making a breathtaking entry in a soaring column of life that stretches from horizon to horizon.
At the Mara River they load together on the banks before ultimately plunging forward through the raging waters, creating frenzy as they wrestle against swift currents and ready crocodiles.
The wildebeest bring new life to the Mara, not just through their cycle of rebirth of the grasslands, but for the predators that follow the herds.
The Masai Mara has been called the Kingdom of Lions and these regal and proficient hunters rule over these grasslands. Cheetahs are also a common sight in the Mara, as are Hyena and smaller predators such as Jackals.
The Mara is a great natural speculate, a place where Masai warriors share the plains with hunting lions, a place of mighty herds and constant cycles of life, death and renewal.
Wildlife moves freely in and out of the reserve and around neighboring Masai lands. Outside the boundaries of the reserve, can be found many small camp sites and lodges, some of which have walking, horse riding and other safari possibilities.
The Loita Hills and the Nguruman escarpment, both considered holy to the Masai, offer high forest trekking opportunities for the adventurous traveller.
How to get there:
Road entry to Masai Mara is via Narok town, a 3 hours drive from Nairobi. You may prefer to fly to the Mara, which is serviced by 4 man airstrips. Daily routine flights from Nairobi and Mombasa are on hand. Private Charters also use these airstrips. Accessing the Mara area is difficult without private transport.
Masai Mara Safari:
Most guest visitors visit Masai Mara on a safari package from Nairobi or in a hired car. The park has very well established internal roads and tracks. Accessing areas outside the reserve is only possible using ordinary public transportation, and finding your way around can be difficult.
