The Mechanic 2011 Jason Stathem On Line Review: Jason Statham Is Returned In His Original Role In This Big Screen Hit

Remakes seem really popular these days, and "The Mechanic" is right now on the list. This 2011 film is a remake of the 1972 version, which starred Charles Bronson. It's a movie about a contract killer, so the question is: is this movie a go-see or will it need fixing? Let's uncover!

Main Characters

The celebrity of this movie is Arthur Bishop, that is presented by actor Jason Statham. Bishop is actually a killer-for-hire, as well as he is very, very good. His specialty is making his hits look like everyday incidents - accidents or natural causes is top of the list. And when the movie opens, we see his first contract killing - a rich man playing in his personal pool, with armed guards present. Yes, Bishop pulls it off, as well as returns to safety.

One of Bishop's closest friends is Harry McKenna, played by Donald Sutherland. So by nature Bishop is aghast when he realizes his next contract is Harry! It appears that there was a mission in South Africa that went bad but only 2 people knew about that (Harry being one, and Bishop's boss being the other). Harry got cash as a trade for the deal details, so it's his turn to die.

Bishop isn't pleased about this, but he does the deal and kills Harry, that makes it look like a carjacking gone bad. In the meantime, Harry's son, Steve McKenna (performed by Ben Foster) is enraged over his father's killing and hopes to find and kill a carjacker as revenge.

And the Plot of The Mechanic Thickens...

Steve does go in search of a carjacker and finds out one, but before Steve can kill the guy, Bishop intervenes. However, Bishop is intrigued by exactly what Steve has done and takes him as a protegee of sorts, to explain him what a "mechanic" (assassin) can do.

So, Bishop takes Steve out on a deal, so he can see for himself what it really is like. Bishop strangles his hit, then stages it to seem to be an accidental asphyxiation. Then to train Steve further, Bishop clarifies the planning to takes to pull a hit off to make it appear to be an accident.

As you are imagine, there are yet more contracts for Bishop, and Steve gets much more training along the way (as well as close to getting killed him self throughout a contract). And what happens in the end is likely to surprise you!

Should You See The Mechanic?

Critics as well as audiences are about on the same wavelength with this movie; decent enough, but absolutely nothing to write home about. Or to put it one other way, it is surely worth a matinee price ticket for nearly anyone, but worth full price for only people who are into mayhem, or if you liked the original (because you will probably like this remake, also).

By all accounts, though, Jason Statham performs a creditable job as a "mechanic", the role that Charles Bronson had performed in the 1972 version. Great work, Jason!
